Miracle at Quecreek Mine   audiobook wins Silver Ben Franklin Award!

Encourage Publishing has joined with other publishers across the U.S. challenging Audible's overt disregard of copyright law in their plans to add captioning to audiobooks. Currently, Audible is pausing this action for only the largest traditional publishers (Chronicle Books, Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin Random House, Scholastic, and Simon & Schuster) while the issue is hashed out in court.  In its public statement, Author's Guild executive director Mary Rasenberger summarized the issue: "Without authorization and in violation of its contracts with publishers, Audible added a text feature to its audiobooks. Text and audio are different book markets, and Audible is licensed only for audio. . . It has chosen to use its market power to force publishers' hands by proceeding without permission in clear violation of copyright in the titles."

"In essence, Audible is creating a proprietary and separate product using our authors' copyrighted material without permission. Our authors have the same rights as everyone else, and we appreciate being able to join our voice with the AAP,  IBPA, and the Author's Guild," says Leslie Turner, owner of Encourage Publishing. "We are grateful for their legal advocacy against a giant that would have been beyond our resources to battle, and proud to add our voice on behalf of our authors."  Encourage Publishing is listed among the members of IBPA opposing Audible's Captions program and seeking inclusion in  legal relief from this overreach.

IBPA CEO Angela Bole explains, "Unlike many other award programs, the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards™ demand both editorial and design excellence and entrants are judged independently on both. ...This year, over 160 librarians, booksellers, and design and editorial experts – most of whom have decades of book industry experience – judged the books submitted to the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award™ program. The judging process took seven months, beginning in September 2018 and continuing into March 2019. ...This level of detail has helped the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award™ program remain one of the highest national honors for independent publishers for over 30 years.
